Heart Block Treatment traditional In healthy people, the heart beats about 60 to 100 times per minute. The type of heart cells called the sinoatrial node keeps the time. In people with altered physical health, a condition of the heart – heart block arises. Heart block with its scientific name, bradycardia, is the slow beating of the heart (less than 60 beats per minute). It occurs when the beat produced by the upper chambers of the heart cannot pass to the lower chambers of the heart. Technically it is called AV block.
